What Is Web Check-In? First-Time Flyer's Guide India 2026
Web check-in is free online flight confirmation that opens 48 hours before departure. IndiGo charges ₹300 if you skip it. Complete guide for India 2026.

If this is your first flight in India, nobody told you about web check-in at the time of booking. They should have. It takes three minutes, it's free, and it is the difference between choosing your seat and being assigned a middle seat at the back of the plane.

Web check-in is online flight confirmation. You go to the airline's website or app, enter your booking reference and last name, pick a seat from the aircraft map, and receive your boarding pass by email or WhatsApp. That's it. The window opens 48 hours before most domestic departures and is free on all major Indian airlines. IndiGo charges ₹300 per passenger if you skip it and check in at the airport counter instead. Air India, SpiceJet, and Akasa Air do not charge that fee, but you still lose seat choice if you wait.

This guide covers everything a first-time flyer needs to know: what web check-in actually does, when to do it for domestic and international flights, what you need, and what happens if you skip it.

What does web check-in mean?

Check-in is the process of confirming to the airline that you are coming. Traditionally, this happened at the airport. You stood in a queue at the check-in counter, showed your booking reference and ID to the airline agent, and they issued your boarding pass (the slip of paper or digital code that gets you through security and onto the plane).

Web check-in is the same process, done online before you leave home.

You go to the airline's website or app, enter your PNR and last name, pick a seat, and the airline sends your boarding pass to your email or WhatsApp. You print it or save it on your phone. At the airport, you show it at security and at the boarding gate. Nobody needs to issue it to you at a counter.

That is the whole thing. Check-in, done on your schedule, before you leave home.

Why should you do web check-in?

Seat choice is the main reason to do it. When you web check-in, you see the aircraft's seat map, a diagram of all the rows and seats, and you pick where you want to sit. Window or aisle. Front of the plane or back. Near the exit for a faster getaway. Away from the engines if you want it quieter. All of this is your choice, for free, when you check in online.

Skip web check-in and show up at the airport counter on the day of travel, and you get whatever seat is left. On a full flight, that is usually a middle seat somewhere in the back. There is no negotiation at the counter.

There is also the time saving. A passenger with only cabin baggage (no checked suitcase) who has done web check-in does not need to go to the check-in counter at all. They walk into the airport, go directly to security, and straight to the boarding gate. At busy morning slots in Delhi, Mumbai, or Bengaluru, that counter queue can run 30 to 60 minutes. Skipping it is not a small thing.

And your boarding pass is ready before you leave home. If the airline app or website is slow on the morning of travel, you already have the pass because you checked in the day or night before.

What do you need to do web check-in?

For a domestic flight within India, you need exactly two things:

  1. Your PNR. This is the six-character booking reference (a mix of letters and numbers) in your ticket confirmation email. It looks something like 6XR9QT.
  2. The last name on the ticket. The surname exactly as it appears on the booking.

No Aadhaar, PAN, or airline account needed. Just PNR and last name.

You enter them on the airline's website (IndiGo at goindigo.in, Air India at airindia.com, SpiceJet at spicejet.com) and your booking comes up. Select a seat, confirm, and the boarding pass arrives by email or WhatsApp.

For an international flight, the same two things get you through web check-in. You will still need to visit a counter at the airport to show your passport and visa documents. Web check-in does not replace that step for international travel. More on this below.

When to do web check-in: domestic flights

The web check-in window opens 48 hours before departure and closes 60 minutes before departure for domestic flights on all major Indian airlines.

If your flight is Thursday at 7am, the window opens Tuesday at 7am exactly. Check in any time between Tuesday 7am and Thursday 6am.

The best time is the moment the window opens. At T-48, the seat map has the largest pool of free seats. Every hour that passes, other passengers are picking. By Tuesday night, the good free window and aisle seats on a popular route may already be gone. By Wednesday night, you may be choosing between a few remaining middles.

Set a phone reminder for T-48: the same time your flight departs, two days earlier. Check in the moment it goes off.

AirlineWindow opensWindow closes (domestic)
IndiGo48 hours before departure60 minutes before departure
Air India48 hours before departure60 minutes before departure
SpiceJet48 hours before departure60 minutes before departure
Akasa Air48 hours before departure60 minutes before departure
Air India Express48 hours before departure60 minutes before departure

All five major Indian airlines follow the same domestic timing. There is no benefit to waiting.

When to do web check-in: international flights

International flights have different timing, and the rules vary by airline.

AirlineWindow opensWindow closes (international)
IndiGo24 hours before departure75 minutes before departure
Air India48 hours before departure120 minutes before departure
Air India Express24 hours before departure60 minutes before departure
SpiceJet48 hours before departure60 minutes before departure

Two things to watch here. IndiGo's international window opens only 24 hours before, not 48 like domestic. Set your reminder for T-24 on IndiGo international flights. Air India closes its international window two hours before departure, which is earlier than any domestic flight. If you are on Air India internationally, do not wait until the last minute.

Even where the airline allows 48 hours for international web check-in, check in early. International flights fill up more completely than domestic ones, and seat availability at T-24 versus T-48 can look very different.

Domestic vs international: what changes?

The web check-in process is identical. What changes is the airport experience after you arrive.

Domestic flightsInternational flights
Web check-in opensT-48 hoursT-24 or T-48 (airline varies)
Boarding pass issuedYes, onlineYes, online
Counter visit requiredNo (cabin baggage only)Yes. Passport and visa check
Identity verified atSecurity checkpoint (Aadhaar/PAN/passport)Check-in counter + immigration
Arrive at airport90 minutes to 2 hours beforeAt least 3 hours before
What saves timeSkip counter queue entirelyFaster counter (docs ready, seat chosen)

For domestic passengers with only cabin baggage, web check-in means skipping the counter completely. Show the boarding pass at security and at the gate. Nothing else.

For international passengers, web check-in saves time at the counter. You arrive with your seat chosen and boarding pass already issued, so the agent only needs to check your documents. But you cannot skip the counter. Every international passenger goes through it. The airline must physically verify your passport and confirm you meet the entry requirements of your destination country. That cannot happen online.

If you are flying internationally for the first time, the sequence is: check-in counter (document check and bag drop), then immigration, then security, then the gate.

What are the requirements to board after web check-in?

At every checkpoint, you need your boarding pass. Everything else depends on whether the flight is domestic or international.

Domestic flights

At security, you need your boarding pass and a valid government-issued photo ID. Accepted IDs include Aadhaar card, PAN card, voter ID, driving licence, and passport. The name on the ID must match the name on the ticket.

At the boarding gate, you scan your boarding pass.

International flights

At the check-in counter, you need your passport and any required visa. The airline checks whether you have the right documents to enter your destination country.

At immigration, you need your passport and completed arrival/departure documentation.

At security, you show your boarding pass again.

At the gate, you scan your boarding pass.

A first-time international traveller should arrive at least three hours before departure. Domestic travellers can typically manage with 90 minutes to two hours.

What happens if you skip web check-in?

Nothing permanent. You can still fly.

You arrive at the airport, join the check-in counter queue, and the agent processes your check-in the traditional way. The flight does not leave without you because you skipped it online.

What you lose is seat choice, time, and on IndiGo, money.

Seat choice goes first. A full flight at the counter usually means a middle seat past row 25. Window and aisle seats go to passengers who checked in at T-48.

The time cost is real. The check-in queue at a busy domestic airport runs 30 to 60 minutes in the morning. Passengers who web checked in with cabin baggage have already cleared security by then.

IndiGo charges ₹300 per person on domestic flights and ₹600 on international if you check in at the counter while the web check-in window was still open. This fee does not apply if the window was already closed (under 60 minutes to departure), if you have special assistance needs, or if IndiGo's website had a documented technical failure. Air India, SpiceJet, and Akasa Air do not charge this fee.

The ₹300 or ₹600 is not a fine. It is IndiGo telling you it prefers online check-in. Web check-in takes three minutes and costs nothing. Skip it and you may pay the fee, lose the seat, and stand in a 30-minute queue.

Can you change your seat after web check-in?

Yes, on most airlines. Log back into the check-in section using your PNR and last name, and change your seat selection. The boarding pass updates automatically.

On IndiGo, you can change your seat as many times as you like within the web check-in window. The system reissues the boarding pass each time.

Paid seat upgrades (exit rows, front rows) are also accessible after initial web check-in, as long as those categories still have availability.

A note on DigiYatra

IndiGo and several other airlines support DigiYatra at major Indian airports including Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru.

DigiYatra is a biometric boarding system. You register once using your Aadhaar and a face scan. After that, at airports where DigiYatra is available, facial recognition at the entry gate and boarding gate replaces the physical boarding pass scan.

DigiYatra does not replace web check-in. You still complete web check-in to confirm your seat. DigiYatra replaces the boarding pass scan at the gate with a face scan. For passengers who have registered, it is faster. For those who have not, the standard boarding pass process works normally.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is web check-in and how does it work?
Web check-in is online flight confirmation done before you reach the airport. Go to the airline's website or app, enter your PNR (the 6-character booking reference from your ticket email) and last name, pick a seat from the available map, and the airline sends your boarding pass to your email or WhatsApp. Show that boarding pass at security and at the boarding gate. For domestic flights with only cabin baggage, you skip the check-in counter entirely. Web check-in opens 48 hours before departure on all major Indian airlines and costs nothing.
Is web check-in mandatory for flights in India?
Not legally mandatory on most airlines, but skipping it costs you. IndiGo charges ₹300 per passenger for domestic flights and ₹600 for international if you check in at the counter while the web check-in window was still open. Air India, SpiceJet, and Akasa Air do not charge this fee. Beyond the money, skipping web check-in means you lose seat selection and stand in a counter queue that runs 30 to 60 minutes at busy airports. Practically, it is always worth doing.
What is the difference between web check-in for domestic and international flights?
Same process online, different airport experience. For domestic flights, web check-in opens at T-48 hours and passengers with cabin baggage only can skip the counter entirely. For international flights, you still get your boarding pass and seat choice online, but you must visit the airline counter at the airport to have your passport and visa verified. That step cannot be done online. IndiGo opens international web check-in at only T-24 hours (not T-48), and Air India closes its international window at T-120 minutes. Arrive at least 3 hours early for international flights.
What do I need for web check-in?
Two things only: your PNR and your last name. The PNR is the 6-character booking reference (like 6XR9QT) in your ticket confirmation email or SMS. Your last name must match exactly as it appears on the ticket. No Aadhaar, no PAN, no password, no airline account needed. For domestic flights, your ID is checked at the airport security checkpoint, not during online check-in. For international, your passport and visa are checked at the airline counter when you arrive at the airport.
When is the best time to do web check-in?
The moment the window opens. For domestic flights that is exactly 48 hours before departure. For IndiGo international it is 24 hours before. That is when the seat map has the most free window and aisle seats. On popular routes, good free seats are claimed within the first 12 hours of the window opening. Set a phone reminder for T-48 (or T-24 for IndiGo international) so you do not miss it. Waiting until the morning of travel usually means choosing between whatever middles are left.
Can I do web check-in for a first-time international flight?
Yes, it works the same way. Enter your PNR and last name on the airline's website, choose your seat, and download your boarding pass. The difference is that you must still visit the airline check-in counter at the airport for your passport and visa to be physically verified. This is standard for all international passengers and cannot be done online. Budget at least 3 hours before your international flight. Web check-in means your seat is already chosen and your boarding pass is ready, so the counter visit is quicker. But you will go through it.

The bottom line

Web check-in is three minutes of work done at home. You choose your seat, your boarding pass is ready before you leave, and if you are travelling with cabin baggage only, you walk past the counter queue entirely. Skip it and you give all of that up. On IndiGo, you also pay ₹300 for the privilege.

Timing is the thing to get right. Set a reminder for 48 hours before your domestic flight. Check in the moment the window opens. Pick a window or aisle in the middle of the cabin if you want comfort with no extra cost. Download the boarding pass to your phone.

For international flights, same process, but plan to still visit the airline counter at the airport. Bring your passport, and budget at least three hours before departure.

For travel agents managing bookings on behalf of clients, the web check-in reminder is one of the most practical things to automate in the post-booking window. Flyo has been handling automated web check-in coordination for travel agents since 2024, processing 100 to 150 check-ins daily across domestic and international routes. Clients get their boarding pass on time, agents do not have to chase each passenger manually, and nobody shows up at the IndiGo counter and pays ₹300 because they missed the window.

For agents specifically, the post-booking window (the 24 to 48 hours right after a booking is confirmed) is when web check-in reminders matter most. A client who misses the T-48 window loses seat choice and potentially pays IndiGo's counter fee.
